Everlasting Cough...

Our poor sweet Nora has had a relatively mild cough that has been hanging around for months.  It just won't ever go completely away.  Most of the time it is fine...just really minor.  Sometime the cough flares up though and it is terrible!  She's up all night coughing to the point that she throws up.  It's terrible!  We've taken her to the doctor before (and we've mentioned it at every well check) but they had mostly been relating it to something else every time.  Most recently, it was attributed to her starting at daycare.  When we took her in a few months ago they though maybe allergies, so she's been on Claritin.  Sort of helping a bit.

Well, last night was terrible again.  Coughing all night.  She was not sleeping...and when she was it was not soundly.  Shawn and I weren't sleeping.  Marcie wasn't sleeping.  Just a terrible night.  So I took her to the doctor today.

Finally, they decided to do some tests.  The doctor said it could be bronchiolitis being caused intermittently by a viral or bacterial trigger.  The doctor mentioned the term "reactive airway disease" which is basically asthma for kids less than 5.  They did a CBC which showed no signs of infection, and a RSV test, which was also negative.  So we're thinking now that is is the reactive airway disease that is being trigger intermittently by some allergen/allergens.  We don't really know, but we're going to start some treatment!

She got an albuterol nebulizer treatment and it really seemed to help!  So we now have a home nebulizer and some albuterol to see if this helps.  It is isn't better by Monday then they are going to give her a round of oral steroids to help with the inflammation in her airways.  I hope she quits this coughing soon...and grows out of this!
